Nigerian Professor Invents HIV/AIDS Drug (see details)

Prof. Madubuike Ezeibe of Veterinary Medicine, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike has called for clinical trial of his HIV/AIDS drug.
Prof. Madubuike Ezeibe
A researcher, Prof. Madubuike Ezeibe, has called on the Federal Government to carry out a clinical trial of the drug he invented for the treatment of HIV/AIDS, Aluminum-Magnesium Silicate, reports Punch.
Ezeibe who is a professor of Veterinary Medicine, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, made the call in Umuahia on Monday.
A clinical trial is a study that explores whether a medical strategy, treatment, or device is safe and effective for humans. It shows which medical approaches that work best for certain illnesses or groups of people.
The don who presented a paper on the potential of the drug as both antiviral and raw material, at a world conference on Ethnopharmacology in Chicago, United States, on May 2, 2016, said that more than one year after he invented and presented his findings at different international conferences, no authority anywhere in the world had disputed the research findings.
“I, therefore, appeal to the federal government to institute an inter-ministerial committee to carry out clinical trial of the drug in six centres across the country without further delay.

“The committee should comprise federal Ministries of Health, Education, Environment as well as Science and Technology, with, at least, 1000 sample patients from each state of the federation.

“Some of the findings of the research include that silicates have molecules that are 0.96 nanometre in size while HIV has molecules as big as 110 nanometres.

“The particles of AMS are positively and negatively charged, while HIV-infected cells are positively charged.

“The AMS are immune stimulants; one can use simple sugar (glucose) to transport charged molecules across the mucous membrane to the blood.

“Glucose helps to transport the drug to any part of the body, including ‘the sanctuary’, where other drugs cannot reach to attack the HIV-infected cells.

“So, if these findings are true and nobody has challenged the claims of the research, let the federal government set up an inter-ministerial committee to conduct clinical trial of the medicine,’’ he said.
Ezeibe expressed joy that the Vice Chancellor of MOUAU, Prof. Francis Otunta and the University Senate had investigated his claims and given their approvals.
He said that aside from the support from the university, the Abia Government also sponsored the publication of the book on AMS which, according to him, is now available for sale.
The researcher said that no fewer than 500 HIV cases within and outside Nigeria had been referred to him which he treated.

“All the HIV cases were referral from a medical doctor to the Medical Director of MOUAU. I have also handled referrals from different parts of African and Asian continents,’’ Ezeibe said.

Over 1000 Students Failed Law School Exam

The Nigerian Law School has said that 1, 272 of its students representing 21.6 per cent of those who participated in the final bar examinations conducted in August, failed.
The institution also said 29 students were graded first class.
This is contained in the executive summary of the results of the Council of Legal Education which runs the NLS.
The document signed by the Director-General of the NLS, Mr. Olanrewaju Onadeko (SAN), and released to journalists in Abuja on Saturday stated that 5,891 students participated in the examinations.

Over 500 First Year Students Face Withdrawal In University Of Ibadan [See Reason Why]

Over five hundred fresh students of the Univerity of Ibadan are going to face possible expulsion from the school following their poor academic performance, the University VC has said.

The Vice Chancellor (VC), University of Ibadan, UI, Professor Abel Olayinka has lamented the poor performance of the first year students of the institution in the recently concluded First Semester Examination, saying that 510 of the 2,961 of the 100 level students face withdrawal from the institution due to poor performance.

The affected students were those admitted at the time the Federal Government placed a ban on the conduct of Post-UTME examination and were admitted base on their JAMB and WAEC/NECO results.

In a statement, Olayinka said, “The Senate of the University of Ibadan at its meeting held on Wednesday, 18 October, 2017, considered the results of the First Semester Examinations for the 2016/2017 Session. One major feature of the results was the noticeably poor performance of the 100 level students.

“From our records, 510 of the students out of the 2,961 posted a Cumulative Grade Point Average of less than 1.0. Kindly note that this is the minimum level of performance required to retain studentship here. In other words, 17.2 percent of the 100 level students would have to significantly improve their academic performance in order not to be advised to withdraw from the University at the end of the session”.

An histogram provided by the Vice Chancellor to illustrate the percentage of the students with CGPA less than 1.0 across the faculties in the university shows as follows: Faculty of Arts- 6.9, science-16, Basic Medical Sciences-34.8, Clinical Sciences-5.5, Dentistry-7.1, Public Health-45.8, Forestry-33.3, Social Sciences-8.3, Education-15.4, Veterinary Medicine-26.6, Technology-20.9, Law-2.4, and Pharmacy-12.9.

Stressing that the situation was particularly alarming in the Science-based faculties, and that parts of the second stanza on the University Anthem talks of ‘Greatness won with honest toil’, Olayinka said, “As leaders of this University at this point in time, we have the onerous responsibility of bringing the best out of our students.

“For me as a person, it hurts very deeply when any student is advised to withdraw from the university on account of very poor academic performance. As you are aware, the pass mark in any of your courses is now 45 percent as against 40 percent hitherto. Secondly, Continuous Assessment now accounts for 40 marks out of the maximum 100 marks in each course.

“Moreover, the minimum number of units that you need to pass at the end of the 100 level is now 24 units, as against 20 units previously. All these taken together indicate that the standard is being improved. Students are expected to rise to the occasion by being more focused and always remember the primary reason why you are here.

“One of the measures being put in place, by Senate, is to strengthen our Continuous Assessment Policy. In this respect, there will be at least two tests or assignments conducted during this Semester. The three domains of cognitive, affective and psychomotor are to be taken into consideration in the determination of continuous assessment scores.

“The marks allotted to continuous assessment will be spread to reflect the totality of what students do and could include one or a combination of quizzes, conduct in and out of class, theatre, laboratory, class participation, group work, practical/field work, assignments, class attendance, presentations and tests. Moreover, a week has been set aside in the revised Academic Calendar for Continuous Assessment. This is the period from Monday, 6 November 2017 to Friday, 10 November, 2017,”
 he explained.

According to the VC, “I hasten to add that the Senate has directed Heads of Departments to implement the strengthened Continuous Assessment Policy in the University. Deans of Faculties will monitor the level of compliance while the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) will coordinate”.

Another Man Jumps Into Lagos Lagoon

The man who jumped off the Lekki-Ikoyi bridge into the Lagos lagoon on Friday morning has been identified as Oluseyi Adekunle.

Adekunle, who, appeared to be on his way to work dropped his bag at the rails before taking the plunge into the Lagoon in an apparent suicide bid.
His ATM card and other items were recovered from the scene of the sad incident, thereby revealing his identity.
Officials of the Lagos Waterways Authority, the state emergency management agency and the marine police rushed to the scene in an attempt to rescue the victim, Channels Television reports.
After a four-hour search without recovery of the body, the officials had to call off the joint operation.
The authorities are still investigating the cause of Adekunle’s action as he is believed to have committed suicide.
This incident comes barely six months after a medical doctor identified as Allwell Orji jumped to his death from the third mainland bridge into the lagoon.

Types of Work Experience for Graduate And Fresh Graduate [A Must Read]

If you're a fresh graduate, student or experienced graduate looking to boost your CV for your potential employers, you will find this article very helpful.

Having a work experience is quite essential in getting a job in Nigeria today. However, why previous work experiences may be very important in getting a new job, for recent graduates the case may be slightly different. This is because employers may use the term “experience” in different contexts which may connote different meanings.
What this means is that the term “work experience” as used in job advertisements have different variations and kinds. An understanding of these kinds of experiences will help you pursue your activities a right and thus structure your CV in such a way to have one or two substantial details on your job experience field of your CV. The three major kinds of Job experiences are as follows;
1. Actual Work Activities
Primary of what constitutes a job experience is actual work activities that one has engaged in before. This is what most employers consider as work experience. It encompasses previous tasks and activities carried out in an official capacity or in a formal organization. But many students and fresh graduates may not have this opportunity. So your focus as a student should be on the other two below.
2. Internships/Industrial Trainings
Various Institutions in Nigeria have internship and industrial training program as part of their curriculum. For some schools, it is to be done in partial fulfilment of the requirements to be awarded an institutional degree. However, a few courses do not offer such opportunities. But whichever is the case, an internship can be done by a student or fresh graduate whether as part of his or her program or not.
It is perhaps the easiest way for students or fresh graduates to get an opportunity to have a work experience in their CVs. Many companies offer such internship opportunities and industrial training programs. Some do it in order to help train and build students coming to their professions in the future.
Some other companies offer it in order to have cheap labour. But irrespective of the motive behind it, internship is a great deal for young people who have no experience at all. It gives you a learning platform and ultimately distinguishes you from the vast majority of your contemporaries later in the future. Many internship programs abound. See current Internship opportunities available in Nigeria.
3. Volunteering Activities
In the situation where your course of study does not give you the opportunity to intern in a company in order to get a work experience, or somehow you are unable to get one, being a volunteer is the next best option. The major difference between volunteering and interning is the pay. While as an intern, you may be given stipends for working, a volunteer may not be paid at all. But, it’s important to note that as a student or fresh graduate, getting a huge pay or a pay at all is not the goal.
The goal at this stage in life is to learn as many skills and accumulate as much experience as you can. This is the goal. It later serves as a work experience for you in future.
Conclusion
As being emphasized in the course of this article, work experience is very important for you to get the desired job in future. However, as a student or fresh graduate, you do not necessarily need to be employed as a full staff to have one.
Engagement in internship programs, industrial training, or volunteer activities can be a great platform for you to learn various skills and yet get a work experience.

Auchi Polytechnic Bans SUG Till Further Notice

The Public Relations Officer of Auchi Polytechnic has on Monday, announced the proscription of the institution's Student's Union Government till further notice.

The authorities of Auchi Polytechnic have proscribed the Student’s Union Government over threat to the scheduled school’s second semester examination on Monday.

Mustapher Oshiobugie, the institution’s Public Relations Officer, made the disclosure in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Benin.

He said the proscription of the SUG arose from the threat by the out-gone executive members of the union to disrupt the examination in protest over management’s postponement of union elections till after the sessional examinations.

“It is true that management has banned all activities of the SUG till further notice effective from this morning.

“The school’s management, acting on security reports, postponed the SUG election until the conclusion of the scheduled sessional examination which commenced this morning.

“The report was such that if management allowed the election to hold, there was likely going to be security breach of great magnitude.

“It is correct and a fact that the process of the SUG elections had commenced with the conclusion of the ethnic groupings known as `Kparakpo’ , departmental and school’s election.

“But following the violent incident of last year, management took the security report very seriously and decided to postpone the election till after examination to allow things to calm down.

“But members of the out-gone exco of the SUG, who insisted on going ahead with the election, went violent in protest.

“The situation has been brought under control. Examination is in progress as i speak with you as they only disrupted the first paper,” he said.

Mr. Oshiobugie assured students and staff of their safety and urged them to go about their normal businesses on campus.

Before oloyede jamb remitted N50 million naira To F.G in Seven years

A new revelation has shown how the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board remitted only N50 million to the Nigerian government in seven years.

An investigation by Premium Times has revealed that the total amount the Joint Admission and Matriculations Board, JAMB, remitted to the federal government coffers between 2010 and 2016 is N 50,752,544.

This is about one per cent of the N5 ‎billion the agency remitted to the federal government in 2017 alone.

The seemingly ridiculous nature of the remittances before the appointment of Ishaq Oloyede as Registrar of the examination body in August last year led to the federal government mandating the investigation of previous heads of JAMB.

The Federal Executive Council, FEC, in September ordered a probe into the administration of the past heads of JAMB and the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA, over what it called poor revenue remittance in the past.

“Now they (JAMB) have not increased their charges, they have not increased their fees. The question that FEC and council members were asking was ‘where was this money before?'” Finance Minister Kemi Adeosun said after the September 13 FEC meeting.

Dibu Ojerinde, who headed JAMB between 2007 and 2016 is believed to be at the centre of the investigation to be conducted.

The remittances between 2010 and 2017 were contained in a document by the office of the Accountant General in response to a Freedom Of Information, FOI, request by the Premium Times Centre for Investigative Journalism.

The accountant general’s office stated that N11,522,808 was remitted in 2011; N25, 303,274 was remitted in 2013 and N13,926,462 was remitted in 2014.

There was no remittance in 2010, 2012, 2015 and 2016, Bakari Wadinga of the accountant general’s office said in response to the FOI request.

When contacted on the poor remittances by the agency prior to Mr. Oloyede’s assumption of office, the JAMB spokesperson, Fabian Benjamin, said ”the issue has gotten to the Federal Executive Council and until the investigation ordered by the federal government revealed anything, I cannot talk on the issue.”

University Of Ilorin ‘Has Become A Terrorist Organisation’ – ASUU

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has said the University of Ilorin ‘has become a terrorist organisation as far as industrial relation is concerned.’
ASUU in a statement on Sunday by Dr Ade Adejumo and Dr Deji Omole Zonal; Coordinator of the Ibadan Zone of ASUU, and Chairman, University of Ibadan Chapter after the sacking the ASUU chairman in the school, Dr. Kayode Afolayan by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abdulganiyu Ambali said that it was the height of impunity to sack a person ‘for exposing the impunity, lawlessness and disregard for due process’ in the University.
The statement read thus:-
The outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abdulganiyu Ambali took all these to an unprecedented height when in 2015, he smuggled his wife, Dr (Mrs) Taiwo Toyin Ambali, into the University through the temporary appointment route as Lecturer 1.
By 2016, less than one year later, she had been promoted to the rank of Senior Lecturer, when the regulation specifies at least three years before such a promotion could take place.
‘Our branch Chairperson, Dr Kayode Afolayan, on behalf of the union, signed a letter addressed to the Council to look into the infringement against the university Rules and Regulations committed by Prof Ambali.
‘However, rather that retrace his steps, the outgoing Vice Chancellor issued a query to the branch Chairperson, Dr. Kayode Afolayan, alleging that they circulated an unspecified “leaflet” against the Vice-Chancellor.
‘The Union promptly alerted members of the public to the evil plans of Prof Ambali to sack our officers in Unilorin.
Just yesterday, 21st September, 2017, the University Administration completed another cycle of impunity, lawlessness and disregard for due process with the termination of appointments of the branch Chairperson.
“This very unfortunate development has again exposed the evil going on in the University of Ilorin. The university has devised all means to suppress legitimate industrial activities in order to avoid exposure of its misdeeds.
‘Indeed, the university prides itself in its ability to “kill off” staff and students that are connected in any way to ASUU leadership.
‘This hate crime on the part of the university is usually carried out under the guise of “uninterrupted academic calendar”. Yet, many universities have also maintained a stable academic calendar without destroying union members or their careers.
“To all intents and purposes, UNILORIN has become a terrorist organization as far as industrial relation is concerned.
Equally worrisome is the seeming connivance of relevant authorities with Unilorin in its dastardly pursuit.
For example, our union, since December 2016, had submitted petitions to the EFCC, ICPC and the CCB but until now results of “ongoing investigations” have not been made known to the public..
“Our union also wrote petitions to the Ministry of Education and the Visitor to the School but no concrete step has been taken. The silence by these relevant agencies and authorities casts serious doubt on the commitment of government in the anti-graft war especially in the University of Ilorin where there are glaring manifestations of corruption. This has emboldened UNILORIN to embark on the victimization of the whistle blowers in the university.
“Our union wishes to reiterate that it will not sit by and watch the continuous victimization of its members in the University of Ilorin.
We warn that the crisis of the University of Ilorin is once again on the verge of ballooning into a national crisis reminiscent of 2001 when the same university sacked 49 academics in one fell swoop.
“The union calls on all well-meaning Nigerians and the appropriate authorities to intervene urgently to restore justice in the university and stave off a needless crisis.
Members of the public and the press are also to take note that, in line with the union’s constitution and code of practice, the purportedly sacked Chairman of the branch remains the bonafide Chairman of the Union in UNILORIN.”
“The University of Ilorin had on the 19th September, 2017 in a letter titled:
“ Termination of Appointment” signed by the Registrar and Secretary to the Council of the university E. D. Obafemi stated that “Council at its 155th meeting held on Monday 28th August 2017 considered the report from the 41st meeting of staff disciplinary committee held on Wednesday 7th June 2017, 8th June 2017 and Thursday June 2017 and approved that your services are no longer required.
Consequently it directed that you should be relieved of your appointment.
Accordingly your appointment is hereby terminated with effect from the date of this letter

Tips To get That Dream Job

Getting a job for some is no fun. For all, it’s hard work. But working hard on the wrong things is a waste of time. So rather than complaining, take some advice from Jim Rohn: “Things will get better for you, when you get better.

1. Applying directly to job postings should represent no more than 20% of what you do. Getting referred to a job is 5-10X more effective than applying directly. If you’re going to apply, only apply to jobs when you’re a perfect fit for the skills and experience listed on the job description.

2. Leverage your understanding of the recruiter’s role. Many recruiters are gatekeepers who don’t know the job and will just box-check your skills and experiences. Others are extremely talented, who want to work with the best people to craft great career moves. You must avoid the former and seek out the latter.

3. Implement a 20/20/60 job-hunting plan. A job hunting plan requires a performance-based resume, an understanding of how recruiters find candidates, and applying through the backdoor. Networking is the key to the backdoor. It must represent 60% of what you need to do.

4. Focus on the job, not the money. It’s better to be underpaid than overpaid. Getting promoted or obtaining a big compensation increase will only occur after you’ve demonstrated great performance. You need to put yourself into these situations. Ignore anyone who says otherwise.

5. Present your strengths and weaknesses via short stories. No one believes general statements. You must validate each of your strengths with a specific example of how it was used in a real job situation. In addition, you need to demonstrate how you’ve turned your weaknesses into strengths. Never say you don’t have any weaknesses! It means you’ve stopped growing.

6. Divide and conquer by asking the universal question. Very early in the interview, or phone screen, you must ask the interviewer to describe the focus of the job, some of the big challenges, and how the new person’s performance will be measured. Pick at least two from this list. Then prove each is a core strength using the SAFW response below.

7. Practice the universal answer to any question. You need to be able to prove every strength with a specific example. Form your answer using the SAFW two-minute response: Say A Few Words – Statement – Amplify – few Examples – Wrap-up.

8. Weave the 10 Best Predictors of Job Success into Your SAFW Response. I just wrote a post for interviewers on how to evaluate your answers. Make sure you have an example proving you possess at least three or four of these strengths. Then during the interview ask if these traits are important for on-the-job success. Of course they will be. Then give your example. Note: this is a slam dunk!

9. Use the phone screen to minimize the impact of a weak first impression. Even if you make a good first impression, it’s important to ask the universal question (see above) early in the phone screen. Answering it correctly will increase the likelihood you’ll be invited to an onsite interview. This will help focus the actual interview on your past performance, instead of box-checking your skills and experience, or judging you on first impressions.

10. Uncover any concerns before the end of the interview. To determine where you stand, ask the interviewer about next steps. If they’re not specific, you probably won’t be called back. In this case, ask the interviewer what’s the biggest concern he/she has about your background. Then ask how the skill, trait or factor mentioned is used on the job. To overcome the concern, you’ll need to use the SAFW two-minute response to prove you can handle the requirement.

Good news; ASUU finally suspends strike(see details)

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has announced a “conditional suspension” of its strike.

The ASUU President, Prof Biodun Ogunyemi, stated this at a briefing at the Nigeria Labour Congress secretariat.

Ogunyemi said the strike was suspended after the union gave the Federal Government a deadline of the end of October to fulfil its promises.

He said, “After an elaborate and extensive consultation process, the National Executive Council of ASUU has agreed to conditionally suspend the ongoing strike action.

“So, all members of ASUU are to resume work after their branch congresses on Tuesday (today), September 19. However, ASUU will not hesitate to review its position, should the government renege on its MoA, which you all witnessed today.”

ASUU Set To Call Off Strike This Week (Read Details)

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) may call off its one-month old strike this week. President of the Union, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, has disclosed the industrial action has not ended yet, because ASUU was still ironing out some grey areas in the agreement with the federal government.
Ogunyemi assured the strike would be called off, as soon as the grey areas were resolved. “We are still trying to iron out some grey areas with the government.
Once we finish doing that, we will address the press,” he told The Nation.
ASUU’s leadership had another meeting with the Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, last Friday to report the decisions of its members in accordance with the agreements between both parties.
At a conciliatory meeting with government, the union had agreed to go back to its members, to take a decision on the offer of government and revert back with a view to calling off or suspending the strike.
“Most of these issues stemmed from the 2009 agreement that government had ASUU and also from the 2013 Memorandum of Understanding that the government had with ASUU.
“Government is a continuum. Most of those issues were not issues that cropped up from the Buhari administration, we inherited them. “Based on these discussions, ASUU leadership will consult with its organs and revert back to government within one week.
“They will consult with their organs with a view to calling off the strike. And we expect them to do that within one week, they will get back to government.
“These are the highlights of the meeting and I can tell you that the meeting took place in very cordial atmosphere,” Ngige told newsmen after the meeting.
Do you think this strike will be called off this week ?
